Indoor Environmental Standards Organization is a non-profit organization that provides a national forum for the development and publication of voluntary consensus standards for the assessment of indoor environments. As an American National Standards Institute Accredited Standards Developer IESO's mission is to be the foremost developer and provider of voluntary consensus indoor environmental quality standards, related technical information, and services having recognized quality and applicability that promote public health and safety, and the overall quality of life.
History
Awareness of indoor environmental quality issues has increased dramatically over the past several years.
People of industrialized nations spend as much as 90% of their time indoors, and it is estimated that 30% to 70% of all buildings have indoor environmental quality problems. The EPA ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.
Although awareness and education have increased, there are still many unanswered questions. Property owners, occupants, and insurance companies are looking for answers to these questions while avoiding increased legal liability and costly settlements that rarely provide complete remedies to the situations.
While legislation has been introduced in most states and at the federal level to address indoor environmental quality issues, the industry lacks scientifically sound standards for the assessment of indoor environments. |
